TRUSTEES Dawson Drive residents to seek rezoning for commercial use

Trustees approved a rezoning request for the miniature golf course.
HOWLAND -- Residents of Dawson Drive will lobby the township zoning commission at a meeting tonight to rezone their properties for commercial use.
The older, residential neighborhood is just north of the Cafaro Co.-owned Eastwood Mall.
The move is supported by 75 percent of homeowners on the street, officials said. A petition turned in by rezoning supporters had 33 signatures.
Residents in favor of rezoning the entire street spoke out Wednesday against a proposal by Cafaro Co. to rezone two undeveloped parcels behind Regal Cinemas.
Plans call for a miniature golf course on the property, which will be leased to the Latell family, owners of the Creekside Golf Dome in Girard.
"We are asking you to assure the owners of property on Dawson Drive will get that value for their property by delaying the spot zoning of several small parcels until the entire area can be zoned for commercial development," resident Roger Aiello said in a letter to trustees.
How they voted
Township trustees voted to follow the recommendation of the Trumbull County Planning Commission and the township zoning commission to rezone the two parcels.
It will eventually be up to the trustees to act on whatever the zoning commission decides regarding the rest of the area.
When the township was drawing up land use plans five years ago, neighborhood residents wanted to keep the area residential, township administrator Darlene St. George said.
"Now they are saying, "Just give us the opportunity to sell our land as commercial and move," she said.
Wednesday, trustees also accepted the resignation of Allan Segal from the zoning board of appeals. The 18 months remaining to his term will be filled by alternate member Stan Francis.
