Struthers Fire Department receives grants

STRUTHERS -- Grants the Struthers Fire Department recently received will be used to buy exhaust systems for both fire stations, patient-simulators for training and airway equipment for patients.
A FEMA grant of $20,145 will go toward exhaust systems to remove diesel fumes from the fire stations, said Chief Harold Milligan. The grant will cover 90 percent of the cost of the equipment and installation, Milligan said; the city is responsible for the remaining 10 percent.
The exhaust systems are expected to be installed in June, he added.
Last year, a FEMA grant provided for rescue equipment including a thermal-imaging camera and air bags, the chief said. "We have applied for air-pack equipment and the jaws of life for the other station for next year."
Struthers operates two fire stations: one on each side of the railroad tracks.
An Ohio Public Safety EMS grant of $2,125 will provide for mannequins used to teach cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, CO2 detectors and masks used to resuscitate patients, Milligan added.
