Man is charged after woman is beaten
LISBON -- A Jefferson County man is charged with attempted murder by Columbiana County authorities, who accuse him of severely beating his live-in girlfriend in a wooded area of Washington Township near Highlandtown.
Gary Call, 60, of Toronto, Ohio, was to appear later today in Columbiana County Municipal Court for an initial hearing on the first-degree felony charge, which bears a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Call's girlfriend, Susan Kelly, age unknown, was in a Pittsburgh hospital this morning and is expected to recover, county sheriff's detective Jerry Herbert said.
Kelly was choked and beaten with a tree branch and left for dead in the late afternoon or early evening Tuesday. She stumbled from the woods into a yard where a man was cutting grass.
Kelly's condition has prevented investigators from questioning her. The motive for the assault is unclear, Herbert added.
Call surrendered to Toronto police sometime Tuesday and was later sent to Columbiana County, where he was arrested.
