Boy, 5, drowns in Howland

HOWLAND -- Police are investigating the drowning death of a 5-year-old boy.
According to a police report, the boy was found floating in the shallow end of a neighbor's in-ground pool Wednesday. There was about 3 feet of water in that part of the pool.
A man living at 3709 Bellwood S.E., said he was doing yard work around 8:25 p.m. when he went to the back yard and saw the boy floating in the water.
He got the boy out of the pool and brought him to the front yard and administered CPR. Police and fire officers were called to the scene.
The township fire department transported the boy to the hospital were he was pronounced dead. The boy's mother was also taken to a hospital.
The police report further states that a fence surrounded the pool.
"The fence is in different heights and the lowest height appears to be approximately 41/2 feet tall," the report states.
The report further notes that the gate on the fence was closed and the latch shut, but the gate did not have a lock on it.
