Donation to repair bridge
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of Pennsylvania is doing its part to help repair the McConnells Mill Covered Bridge.
Tom Walczak of Shenango Township, president of the organization, gave Lawrence County commissioners $1,000 to help with repairs. The bridge was damaged March 5 when high winds knocked a large tree onto it. It is one of two covered bridges in Lawrence County. Commissioners hired Lone Pine Construction of Bentleyville, Pa., last week to repair the bridge. The repair cost has not been determined.
Site plans approved
COLUMBIANA -- The city planning commission approved a site plan for Jet-o-chem Inc. to construct a building in the city's industrial park. Bob Belding, building and zoning officer, said the building will be the second at the site for the company, which performs industrial cleaning for the steel industry.
Belding said the planning commission also approved a site plan for Greenwood Family Limited Partnership at 1013 Sponseller Road. He said the company will clean up and repave the site of the former Rebel Motors used cars. The lot will be used to store vehicles from the Columbiana Dodge dealership. Belding said the company may also recondition used vehicles at that site.
Office to be closed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Ellwood City satellite office used by the Lawrence County treasurer will be closed. County commissioners decided the office hasn't been effective since the treasurer stopped handling the tax claim bureau.
Commissioner Dan Vogler said they intend to give landlord Nick Frisk Jr. notice this month and hope to have the office closed by the end of June. The monthly rent is $400, but the yearly costs are about $9,000 with utilities and other costs.
Vogler said they will look for more cost-effective ways to have a presence in Ellwood City, possibly asking the borough to rent space in the municipal building. The current satellite office on Fifth Street came under fire recently when it has not been opened during its regular Tuesday and Thursday hours because a treasurer's employee was off sick.
