YOUNGSTOWN -- Chaney sophomore Latalia Jones won four events to earn running MVP and help lead the Cowgirls to a share of the team title at Tuesday's City Series track meet at Chaney High School.
Jones set a meet record in the 100-meters (11.9 seconds), breaking the old record of 12.1 set by East's Nyarinda Aduma in 1985.
"At about 30 meters, I took the lead and felt strong in getting my best time this season," said Jones, who placed third in the event at last year's meet.
"I would like to make it to state, but to do that, I'll have to get my time down to 11.8 or better."
Jones also placed first in the 200 (25.5) and 400 (66.5), and anchored the 4x100 relay (51.7).
Wilson shared first place with the Cowboys with 88 points.
Wilson's Anique Donlow, Martina Lyons, Retina Daniels and Sheray Carter won the final event of the meet, the 4x400 relay, to earn that tie.
Donlow also took first place in the 300 hurdles (51.9) and the high jump (4-9) and finished third in the 100 hurdles (20.3).
"This is my first year out for track and I like to run," Donlow said. "It's fun.
"I plan to run track this summer so that I can get better for next year because I would like to get a scholarship, if I can," Donlow said.
Chaney's Lavielle Trevathan was MVP of the field events after winning the shot put (31-11) and the discus (92-2).
Boys
Rayen's 4x800 relay team opened the meet with a victory and finished it with a win in the 4x400 relay to defend its title with 81 points. Canton Timken was second with 64.
Rayen senior Aaron Thomas placed in the discus (133-5) and was second in the shot put (40-2) to earn field events MVP.
"It wasn't my best throw today," said Thomas, who has thrown the discus 163 feet this season. "I wanted to go after Booker Newberry's record (166-11) and didn't get it."
Chaney's Justin Hood of Chaney took first in the 800 (2:16.9).
"I got the lead with about 200 meters to go, had a lot left and sprinted to the finish," Hood said. "This is my first year out for track. It's competitive, fun and I like the competition."
Rayen's Marcel Finkley was running MVP, placing first in the 1600 (5:14.5), second in the 400 (54.5) and third in the 800 (2:20.4) and 3200 (13:18.8).
Wilson's Kenny Adams took first in the 100 (10.7) and 200 (22.2) and ran the third lap on the winning 4x400 relay (3:36).
