Route 46 reopens
HOWLAND -- State Route 46 is reopened north of King Graves Road.
The closure was part of an $800,000 Ohio Department of Transportation project to align McCleary-Jacoby road perpendicular to state Route 46, and to construct new northbound left-turn lanes on state Route 46 at the intersection.
The entire project is scheduled to be completed this summer.
Car hits, kills girl, 10
WARREN -- A 10-year-old girl was killed Sunday afternoon when she was hit by a car while walking on a sidewalk.
Sandra Carmichael was being held in the Trumbull County Jail this morning on a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide, officials said.
The girl, Tanera Earnest of Third Street, was walking on the sidewalk with two friends about 1:30 p.m. along Highland Avenue when the car went off the road and struck the girl. Carmichael, 57, of Arnold Drive S.W., was treated for minor injuries but was taken back to St. Joseph Health Center this morning. Her arraignment will be later this week.
Fire started by candle
CHAMPION -- An unattended candle left burning in an upstairs bathroom is to blame for a fire that caused about $100,000 damage to a Mahoning Avenue home.
The house is owned by Alfred and Judith Hosaflook, who were not at home at the time, firefighters said. The fire occurred shortly before noon Sunday.
Firefighters said the house is uninhabitable and the family is staying with relatives.
Niles increases patrols
NILES -- Throughout May, Niles police will increase the number of officers on the roads to target drunken and impaired drivers.
The extra manpower will be paid for by state funds provided through the Trumbull County DUI Task Force.
Police: Gun found in car
YOUNGSTOWN -- A loaded stolen handgun with a makeshift laser sight was found Sunday afternoon under the driver's seat of a white Lincoln Town Car driven by Duwayne Morant, 30, of Erskine Avenue, Boardman, police said.
Morant was pulled over on Market Street after police received a report that shots had been fired from a white Lincoln with a broken front grille around 5:40 p.m.
Moran was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property and possession of marijuana. Police said the suspected marijuana was found under the driver's seat.
Tire-disposal grants
COLUMBUS -- Grants totaling $430,637 have been awarded to 44 solid-waste management districts and authorities across the state to help establish and operate tire-collection programs.
Tire Amnesty Grants are used by communities to provide an economical and environmentally friendly means of managing waste tires. No match is required.
The 2004 tire amnesty grants recipient, grant amount and number of tires in the Mahoning Valley area are as follows: Carroll/Columbiana/Harrison SWMD, $10,000, 13,000; Geauga-Trumbull SWMD, $10,000, 11,000; Mahoning County SWMD, $10,000, 10,000.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Recycling & amp; Litter Prevention administers Ohio's Tire Amnesty Grant program.
