Reese powers Red Sox to win
The light-hitting shortstop hit two homers as Boston beat Kansas City 9-1.

BOSTON -- Pokey Reese knows he has a reputation for a great glove and a weak bat. He's doing everything he can to change that.
"I want to be known as an all-around player," he said after the first two-homer game of his career gave Boston a 9-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.
"The defense is there, but I want to be known as a hitter also," Reese said. "That's why I'm going to get my work in ... batting practice. That's where it all starts."
Reese had an inside-the-park homer and one of the conventional type to snap a 172 at-bat homerless streak dating to April 4, 2003.
Curt Schilling (4-2) pitched his first AL complete game and 80th of his career, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight.
Since losing five in a row, the Red Sox have won four straight, including Friday when they scored two in the eighth and three in the ninth to beat the Royals. The Royals could only keep it close for five on Saturday.
Gobble walloped
Jimmy Gobble (1-1), who took a perfect game into the sixth in his last start, gave up six runs on eight hits and a walk, striking out three before he was chased in the five-run sixth. Benito Santiago homered and added a single for the Royals, who have lost 18 of their last 22 and fell to 2-14 on the road.
"Nobody wants to start a season the way we have," said manager Tony Pena, who led the Royals to nine victories to start last season and was the AL's manager of the year. "We're having it very, very bad. ... Today was a tough day -- I have to say, one of the worst days of the season."
Reese snapped his homerless streak in the fifth when he lined an 0-2 pitch down the first-base line that bounced off the wall at an odd angle and got past right fielder Juan Gonzalez before rolling into the corner. The relay from second baseman Desi Relaford was up the first-base line and Reese slid head-first, reaching out to get to the plate before the tag and break a 1-1 tie.

Twins 3, Athletics 2, 10 innings
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Shannon Stewart scored from first base when Bobby Crosby dropped a fly ball in the 10th inning.
Stewart beat out an infield single against Jim Mecir (0-3) with one out. Cristian Guzman flied out, and Stewart ran on an 0-1 pitch to Doug Mientkiewicz, who hit a soft fly to shallow left field. Crosby jogged to make the catch, and the ball bounded off his glove into the bullpen area for an error.
J.C. Romero (1-2) pitched 22/3 innings, helping the Twins win their third extra-inning game in five days. Joe Nathan struck out the side in the 10th around a walk for his eighth save in nine chances.

Blue Jays 4, White Sox 2
TORONTO -- Josh Phelps' first trip around the bases turned out to be a warmup. He did it for real four pitches later.
Phelps hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning -- four pitches after having one overturned -- and the Toronto Blue Jays won their season-high fourth straight.
Phelps hit Neal Cotts' first pitch down the right-field line for what first-base umpire Larry Vanover ruled was a two-run homer. Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen argued the call and the umpires huddled and overruled Vanover's call, changing it to a foul ball. Television replays indicated the ball was foul.
Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca came out to argue after the call was reversed, and that gave Phelps a chance to compose himself.
A few minutes later, Phelps homered over the left-field wall off Cotts (0-1), giving Toronto a 4-2 lead.
"It's a long way to run when you have to do it all over again," said Phelps, who had never seen it happen before. "What are the odds? It's just a nice result at the end of an at-bat, as crazy as that at-bat was."
Phelps wondered if the second shot would stay fair. It barely did.
"When I saw it go up, I was thinking this can't happen twice in the same at-bat," he said. "It started to hook, then it straightened out and after that I knew I was on safe ground."
