PREP TRACK City Series meet Tuesday kicks off week's action
The TAC, SVC, ICL, TCL, MAC and Federal Leagues all compete this week.
It's conference track and field championship week, starting Tuesday at The Rayen School at 4:30 p.m. where City Series athletes will compete.
Latalia Jones of Chaney will featured in the City Series meet having the area's best mark in the 200-meter dash (25.6 seconds) and one of the best times in the 100 (12.3).
Rayen will defend in both boys and girls titles, with Wilson and Canton Timken also entered.
Ken Adams of Woodrow Wilson returns to defend the 100 dash (11.0). Chaney's Clarence Howell will be the athlete to beat in the long jump (20 feet, 71/2 inches).
TAC at Newton Falls
Many of the athletes entered in the Trumbull Athletic Conference meet Tuesday at Newton Falls High at 4:30 p.m. competed in the Lakeview Invitational May 1.
Lakeview is defending boys champ, while Girard and Lakeview shared the 2003 girls' crown. Featured in the sprints will be Newton Falls' Matt Gillespie and Anthony Barnes, while Barnes (22 feet, 101/2 inches) and Liberty's Bradley Fletcher will contend in the long jump.
Jasmine Smith and Brittny Humphrey of Liberty, Brittany Bako of Champion and Katie Betts of Lakeview should make the dashes interesting to watch.
ICL at Mineral Ridge
Nick Panezich of Springfield will be the featured athlete at the Inter-County League meet at Mineral Ridge High Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Panezich has the area's best marks (59-6) in the shot put and (185-9) in the discus. He set the ICL record (56-31/2) in the shot last year.
Luke McCluggage of Jackson-Milton and Dan Nemergut of South Range will contend in the distance runs.
Emily Johnson of Western Reserve and her teammates Amanda Barbone and Alex Rathburn will compete in the dashes and throws. Andra Sanders of South range and Andra Cardera of Mineral Ridge are entered in the distance runs.
SVC meet scheduled
Mooney High will be host for the Steel Valley Conference meet Thursday at 4 p.m., with Derrick Stewart of Ursuline, Shane Golden of Warren JFK and Jay Provitt and Richard Davis of Warren Harding will compete in the sprints.
Anthony Hoke of Harding is the athlete to bet in the shot put and discus.
Angeline Cicero of Warren JFK (44.8) is the athlete to beat in the 300 hurdles and teammate Jeanne Brian ((124-2) has the best mark in the discus. Cierra Bennett of Ursuline will enter the meet with the area's best time (59.1) in the 400.
7 schools set for TCL
Both the East Palestine boys and girls teams will defend titles at Bulldog Stadium Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Danyelle Newman of East Palestine will attempt to win the 100 hurdles for the fourth year in a row.
Aaron Merrill of Leetonia and Dom DeFillipo will contend in the throws.
State qualifiers entered
The Federal League meet will have several 2003 state qualifiers competing at Fitch High's Falcon Stadium Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Boardman's Mark Lipinsky, with the area's top time in the 300 intermediate hurdles (40.1), will also be among the top contenders in the 110 high hurdles (14.5).
Dave Medicus of Fitch (13-0) and teammate Sam Cassano (160-3) will compete in the pole vault and discus, respectively.
Jessica Moore and Brittany Durkin of Boardman will be featured in the distance runs and the Spartans' Brooke Katzman will contend in the shot put.
Canfield, Howland to defend
Howland's boys and Canfield's girls will defend Metro Athletic Conference crowns at Poland High's stadium Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Featured in the hurdles will be Tony Davis of Howland, John Haug of Poland and Ben Andrea of Salem.
In the girls dashes will be Emily Wollet of Canfield, Lizzie Jesko of Salem and Ellen Midgley of Poland.
The Quakers' Aubree Horning has the area's best shot put distance (40-11/2), while Andrea Murdock of Canfield is the athlete to beat in the discus (123-110).
