Boardman High orchestras win top awards at competition



The orchestras perform May 19.
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman High School Symphony, Chamber and Classical orchestras were awarded individual superior and excellent ratings as well as the Instrumental Grand Champion Trophy at the Fiesta-Val Music Competition in Virginia Beach, Va., last month.
All three groups were cited when they received their highest award, the Instrumental Sweepstakes Champion Trophy. The trophy was awarded when the combined scores of all three orchestras were added. Boardman achieved the highest overall score of any school at the competition.
The 138-member Symphony Orchestra was awarded a "Superior" rating from the judges and a first-place trophy for Division 5. The 89-member Classical Orchestra received an "Excellent" rating from the judges and a first place trophy for Division 4.
The 39-member Chamber Orchestra received a "Superior" rating and a first-place trophy for Division 6, as well as a "Grand Champion Orchestra Trophy" for having the highest score of any orchestra at the competition. An "Outstanding Soloist" trophy was awarded to senior cellist Michele Bartos.
The next regular concert of the Boardman High School Orchestras is 7 p.m. May 19 at the Boardman Performing Arts Center, Boardman High School, 7777 Glenwood Avenue. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for pupils; senior citizens and preschool children are admitted free of charge.
