New jewelry store opens on Mahoning in Austintown
AUSTINTOWN -- A new jewelry store has opened where the former McCormick Jewelers used to be.
Greg Sorley has opened McSorley Jewelers in the Falcon Center Plaza, 5015 Mahoning Ave. The previous store closed in February when Joe McCormick retired.
Sorley said he retained the "Mc" from the McCormick name because his family name was McSorley until his Scottish ancestors came to America. He said he thinks the location is a good place for a jewelry store because it is close to state Route 11 and in a growing suburb.
Sorley and his wife recently moved back to the area to be close to family. He said he had been looking for an opportunity to set up his own store because he wanted to be self-employed.
Sorley had been manager of a jewelry repair shop in Rapid City, S.D., which handled repairs and custom work for a 45-store jewelry chain.
He said he has been in the business for 24 years and received his graduate gemologist degree from the Gemology Institute of America.
