NBA PLAYOFFS Heat don't play well enough
Miami's good stat sheet numbers didn't translate to the scoreboard.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The Miami Heat did so many things they wanted to against Indiana.
They outrebounded the Pacers 47-39, outscored them 14-0 on fast breaks and held MVP candidate Jermaine O'Neal to 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting.
It still wasn't enough in a 94-81 loss Thursday in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series.
Ron Artest had 25 points and six rebounds to help the Pacers shake the rust from an 11-day layoff. Jamaal Tinsley added a playoff career high of 17 points, including 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.
"I thought we did a decent job on Jermaine, but [Artest] was just a monster," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. "He's just got a knack. He makes seemingly very difficult shots. He was fabulous."
Key time
Artest and Tinsley keyed a 25-6 run spanning the second and third quarters that essentially put the game away, despite the Heat's best efforts to rally.
The Pacers were playing for the first time since wrapping up their first-round sweep of Boston on April 25.
"It was a shock to be playing any competition," O'Neal said. "We've been off for a while. We weren't as sharp, the decision-making wasn't as sharp, but it's a plus because we were still able to control the game."
The effects of the long break showed early, with the Pacers committing 10 turnovers in the first half and struggling to execute their offense for much of the game.
Miami, on the other hand, was just two days removed from a grueling seven-game series against New Orleans and couldn't come up with the energy to force the game into its preferred up-tempo style.
Miami shot just 38 percent from the field, missing countless layups and coming up short on jumpers, a sign of fatigue.
"When we run, we're a good team," Heat center Brian Grant said. "When we have to settle for a halfcourt game, we're playing into Indiana's hand."
Rookie Dwyane Wade led the Heat with 22 points and seven rebounds. Caron Butler added 14 points and nine rebounds for Miami, which got the fast start it wanted before Tinsley buried the Heat with his shooting from the outside.
The Pacers went on their big run after Lamar Odom's jumper brought the Heat within 34-32. Artest got things started with two jumpers and a free throw and Tinsley took over from there.
