MAHONING COUNTY Man hospitalized, houses damaged in separate fires

A firefighter walked the injured man out of the smoke-filled house.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Firefighters responded to two house fires overnight, one at 385 Hilton Ave., South Side, in which an occupant suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital, and another fire at 2915 Dearborn St., North Side.
John Weiss Jr. and Pamela Rowbottom and her two children were outside the two-story wood frame structure at 385 Hilton when firefighters arrived about 3:45 a.m. They told firefighters John Weiss Sr. was still inside.
Firefighter Jason Simons went into the smoke-filled house and walked Weiss Sr. out, Battalion Chief Robert Hian said. Weiss Sr. was in stable condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning.
Hian said the Hilton fire, confined to a second-floor bedroom, was caused when a candle that Rowbottom had lighted in another second-floor bedroom, and forgotten about, ignited some clothing. Damage to the house was estimated at $5,000, and to its contents, $3,000.
Dearborn Street
There were two fires at 2915 Dearborn St., the first reported at 8:19 p.m. Thursday and the second at 2:44 a.m. today. The cause of both are under investigation, Hian said.
At the time of the fire, the occupant, Martha Conrad, was at 2833 Dearborn, to where she is in the process of moving. There was no forced entry to the 2915 address and the utilities were shut off, Hian said.
No injuries were reported, but there was an estimated $8,000 damage to the structure.
