Standoff between Elyria police and man ends peacefully
ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) -- A man ended a standoff with police Wednesday night, releasing his 3-year-old daughter and surrendering, authorities said.
Police Lt. Andrew Eichenlaub said Anthony Horton let his daughter go and turned himself in peacefully around 7 p.m. Neither appeared to be injured, but they were examined at a hospital as a precaution, Eichenlaub said.
Eichenlaub wouldn't release any further information late Wednesday on how the standoff ended.
The standoff began Tuesday afternoon after Horton, 33, shot at a social worker and a police officer who were trying to check the welfare of his children, authorities said. On Wednesday morning, he released the 5-month-old son but still had the 3-year-old, authorities said.
Horton believed he was protecting his children because his girlfriend wants to take them away, police said.
The grandmother of the children was hit in the arm by gunfire Tuesday, but no one else was hurt, authorities said. She was treated and released from a local hospital.
Elyria is about 25 miles west of Cleveland.
