Helping the homeless
The Ohio Department of Development will distribute $3.6 million in Ohio Housing Trust Fund grants to 79 nonprofit organizations in the state, including several in Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, that help the homeless. About $2.6 million will be used to make emergency rent, mortgage and utility payments to prevent homelessness, helping 3,300 households and 7,400 people. Area organizations funded are:
Ashtabula County: Catholic Charities of Ashtabula County, $30,000.
Columbiana County: Community Action Agency of Columbiana County, $5,000.
Mahoning County: Interfaith Home Maintenance Service, $100,000.
Trumbull County: Emmanuel Community Care Center, Girard, a project of the Sisters of Humility of Mary Housing Program, $104,000.
About $1 million will be used to rehabilitate 46 homeless shelters and transitional and permanent housing facilities, serving about 19,000 people. Local agencies funded are:
Mahoning County: Beatitude House, $13,500; Meridian Services, $11,800; YWCA of Youngstown, $12,400.
