BASEBALL Squeeze play gives Chaney 9-8 victory
Andrew Chick scored in the bottom of the 11th as Hubbard split a DH.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Rick Hlinka's suicide squeeze scored pinch-runner Corey Sabo with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Chaney High baseball team scored twice in the inning to defeat Howland 9-8 on Wednesday.
Jeff Shaffo and Tim Gordon each had two hits for Chaney (14-5).
Jared Bartholomew had two hits, including a homer, and Adam Solich hit a grand slam for Howland. Craig Dobos had three hits, including a triple and a double.
Niles 4, Ursuline 2
NILES -- Jeff Claar and Kevin Robertson each had two hits for Niles (9-4). For the Irish, Cliff Panezich homered and Ed Rohan added two hits.
Mooney 10, Union 3
STRUTHERS -- Jeff Hehr had two triples and scored three runs for Mooney. Kevin Drummond added two hits for the Cardinals (12-10) and Pat Kelly and Dan Young each added doubles.
Bob Bondi had a double for Union.
Salem 13, Columbiana 12
SALEM -- After the Clippers (16-6) scored four times in the top of the seventh, the Quakers (13-6) won the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jarin Heath and Cody Dillon homered, Grant Sevek hit a triple while Travis Milliron had a double for Salem.
For Columbiana, Drew Wagner tripled and Mike Welce, Ryan Schmidt and David Vilko doubled.
South Range 20, Jackson-Milton 7
NORTH LIMA -- Greg Rohan had four hits with a home run, five RBIs and four runs scored for the Raiders (12-7, 6-1 Inter-County League). Tom Dechellis and Dan McCooey each had three hits with a double apiece.
Steve Bowles had a single, a double and four RBIs for Jackson-Milton (5-13, 3-7).
W. Reserve 11, Mineral Ridge 4
MINERAL RIDGE -- Nick Sanders had a grand slam, a double and four RBIs for Western Reserve.
Jake Zatchok (3-1) got the win and added a two-run homer for the Blue Devils (11-6, 5-3). Luke Srock added a two-run homer, Josh Smith had two hits and two RBIs and Ryan Pauken had two hits.
Brandon Linert and Brian Palmer each had a double for Mineral Ridge (6-9, 4-4).
Girard 7, Hubbard 2Hubbard 7, Girard 6
GIRARD -- Greg Barton had two hits, including a grand slam in the top of the seventh, to lead Girard in the first game, which completed a suspended Trumbull Athletic Conference game from April 22.
Joe Castor added three hits for the Indians. Josh Stipanovich had two hits for Hubbard.
In the second game, Andrew Chick scored the game-winner in the bottom of the 11th inning for Hubbard. Chick singled, moved to third on two passed balls and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyren Gardner. Ryan Hallapy had three hits for Hubbard.
Barton, Mike Grumley, Nick Canterino and Tom Williams each had two hits for Girard (11-7).
Crestview 13, Sebring 7
SEBRING -- Ken Wagonhouser went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Rebels (6-11, 4-6 Tri-County League).
A five-run second inning allowed the Trojans to pull within a run, 6-5.
West Branch 7, Alliance 4
ALLIANCE -- The Warriors (10-10) scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 4-4 tie.
Andy Todor had three hits with a double and Jim King added two hits for the Warriors.
Mathews 16, Lordstown 0
LORDSTOWN -- The Mustangs sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning as it scored nine times to break open the game. Cory Fiest hit two singles, scored three times and drove in three runs for Mathews (9-5).
Warren JFK 11, Windham 1
WARREN -- The Eagles (6-12) put the game out of reach by the third inning as they led 6-1.
Steve Orlosky hit a double, single, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Eagles. Winning pitcher Kevin Lee (3-1) and Adam Amodio each had two hits.
