Warren makes $18,000from tax on winnings
WARREN -- City residents won more than $900,000 in lottery proceeds last year, resulting in more than $18,000 for the city.
The income tax department received a report from the Ohio Lottery Commission documenting the winnings, said Tom Gaffney, income tax administrator.
Council had passed legislation allowing city income tax to be collected on lottery winnings.
Storm water problems
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees will meet with representatives of MS Consultants of Youngstown at a work session at 9 a.m. Thursday to discuss storm water drainage.
MS is doing a flood study for the township since many residents are reporting water drainage problems.
Branch pickup planned
HOWLAND -- Residents on North Road and streets west of North Road may leave trimmed branches up to 6 inches in diameter at curbside by May 10 for pickup by township crews.
A crew will make only one pass of each street.
Mosquito spraying
HOWLAND -- Mosquito spraying is scheduled to take place from 9 p.m. May 17 to 5 a.m. May 18.
Residents are encouraged to close windows and keep pets indoors during this time.
In case of rain, spraying will take place the next evening.
Open enrollment
HOWLAND -- Out-of-district pupils interested in attending Howland schools may pick up open-enrollment applications at the superintendent's office from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 3 p.m. May 10.
Completed applications may be returned during the same hours from May 11 to 14.
Shooting-death probe
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police say the shooting death of a Dayton man may be drug-related. Eduardo Perez, 19, died at 7:34 a.m. Tuesday at UPMC Pittsburgh.
Police Chief Tom Sansone said Perez was shot three times in the Pin Oak Drive area of Crestview Gardens, a low-income housing complex, at 3:21 a.m. Tuesday. Sansone said officers were called to the area for gunshots, but Perez was already gone. An acquaintance drove him to Jameson Hospital and he was later transferred to Pittsburgh.
An autopsy was expected to be performed Tuesday afternoon in Allegheny County.
Sansone said witnesses and friends were still being interviewed and no arrests had been made.
Arms museum reopens
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Arms Family Museum of Local History, 648 Wick Ave., reopened Tuesday after being closed for a capital improvement project, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society has announced.
Some exhibits will remain closed as work continues to make the museum barrier-free. That work is to be completed this summer.
Museum hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
No contaminants foundin water during 2003
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city water department had no violations reported for 2003 in its Consumer Confidence Report, required under the U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act.
The results are based on 65,000 laboratory tests for 125 regulated and unregulated contaminants and 20 secondary contaminants.
The city buys water from the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District and distributes about 21 million gallons per day via 750 miles of pipes to Youngstown, Austintown, Boardman, Canfield Township and Liberty.
The city also sells water in bulk to Mineral Ridge, Girard, the city of Canfield and North Jackson.
Atwater to be speaker
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Northeast Homeowners and Concerned Citizens Association will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Price Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, 920 Dryden Ave.
Members are asked to bring a covered dish.
The speaker will be Tony Atwater, provost and vice president at Youngstown State University.
Talk about greyhounds
HOWLAND -- A representative of a greyhound rescue group will talk about adopting former racing dogs at the Howland branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library at 6 p.m. May 19. The program is free and open to the public.
