Maplewood Park project wins development grant from state

WARREN -- A $300,000 state grant will be used to fix houses and pave streets in the Maplewood Park neighborhood of Hubbard Township.
The Ohio Department of Development announced today that the competitive grant, earmarked for poor communities, had been awarded for the project.
The total cost is expected to be about $622,000 and include funding from the federal HOME program and other state programs, said Alan Knapp, county planning commission director.
"It is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the county," Knapp said. "We are doing just about everything except sanitary sewers."
The area, which is east of Jacobs Road and west of state Route 616 between Youngstown and Hubbard, is scheduled to get sanitary sewers in 2007, he said.
Construction on this project, expected to begin this summer and extend through next year, includes the creation of a small park, drainage improvements, the demolition of dilapidated homes and renovation of perhaps eight occupied structures.
Washington and Lewis streets will be widened and paved, Knapp said. Poplar, Rosser, Knapp, Moab, Rachellen and Ashlar streets will be resurfaced, he added.
