Landfill opponents to hire expert
HUBBARD -- A residents group plans to hire an environmental expert in its effort to stop a proposed landfill in the township.
Joni Dobran, a member of Hubbard Environmental Land Preservation, said the group will hire either an environmental attorney or environmental engineer.
The decisions were finalized Tuesday during a standing-room-only meeting at the township administration building.
"We feel stronger than ever about fighting against this," Dobran said.
She explained that HELP is selling T-shirts and will be conducting fund-raising events to pay the group's expenses.
Landfill project
TransRail Inc., a Maryland company, owns 255 acres and seeks to open a 10-million-ton landfill for construction and demolition materials on a Mount Everett Road site.
"Trumbull County is just getting overrun with landfills," Dobran said, contending that the state has loose landfill regulations.
Dobran said it's her understanding that TransRail plans to bypass the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to get a permit.
In this way, she explained, TransRail will be able to construct small landfill sites rather than a large one so wetlands are not disturbed.
TransRail officials were unavailable to comment.
HELP and Our Lives Count have agreed to attend each other's meetings. Our Lives Count has been opposing the Warren Recycling landfill in Warren.
