K.O. DRUGS Hubbard boxers get four wins in tourney

HUBBARD -- The K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament continued Tuesday at Hubbard High School with 19 decisions, seven bouts stopped by the referee and two wins by default.
The host Eagles were 4 and 2 for the evening. The one tournament fighter who is 2 and 0 is Hubbard heavyweight Anthony Fidram.
Fidram won over Jared Esario from Canfield when the referee stopped the contest in the second round.
Hubbard upperclass lightweight Adam Graban stopped his opponent in round one and underclass middleweight Corey Liston won a hard fought decision over Keystone's Tim Wesley.
The opening bout was a contrast in styles between two Boardman underclass bantamweights. Zach Smith won a close decision over classmate Rick Wanamaker.
Smith, the taller of the two, was a standup fighter while Wanamaker brought a non-stop, buzz-saw attack.
Rios wins decision
Featherweight William Rios from Campbell was a human punching machine in winning a decision over Bobby Crago from Life Skills.
The underclass had two standout big boy bouts with Canfield's Kyle Banna and Casey Denz from West Middlesex hammering out decision victories.
Banna, a sophomore who is a linebacker for the Cardinals in football, won with aggressive power punching over fellow football performer George Taylor from Hubbard.
Denz, weighing 279, outslugged 290-pound Justin Rangel from Mathews.
In the upperclass division, Derek Wagner (313 pounds) of Warren Harding won a decision over Steve Irgang (269) of Liberty.
Football stars win
A pair of football players from the Steel Valley Conference, Rick Solak from Cardinal Mooney and Thomas Howard from Warren Harding, set a torrid pace for super heavyweights. Both are defensive ends on the gridiron, but defense went out the window in the ring as the 6-5, 245-pound Solak gained a decision over 6-4, 240-pound Howard.
In another upperclass super heavyweight bout. Mitch Hall from Niles outslugged Joe Nemcik from Boardman.
Jose Mateo from Campbell a heavyweight veteran from 2003 KO Drugs action showed too much power against Adam Brooks from Life Skills with the referee stopping the bout early in round one.
The other heavyweight fight had Dave Yonnotti from Fitch get a unanimous decision over Tom Bottles from Keystone joining classmate George Swauger to give the Falcons a 2-0 night.
Swauger won a hard fought upperclass super middleweight decision over Emanuel Tiliakos from Campbell.
Campbell had seven boxers in the ring with five wins recorded against two losses.
