Ohio State
COLUMBUS -- Nate King, a freshman on the swimming team from Warren Harding High, recently won two awards at the annual awards banquet. King, a 2003 graduate of Warren Harding who is from Liberty, won the Mike Cochran Award as the "Most Promising Freshman." He also was recognized as a 2004 Scholar-Athlete. "He is extremely competitive and committed to be the best he can be," said OSU coach Bill Wadley of King. "He really exemplifies what the award stands for -- the most promising freshman -- what we see in him. He will continue to get better." King's 200 backstroke time of 1 minute, 47.3 seconds at the Big Ten Championships ranked him No. 6 all-time at Ohio State. No. 1 is Marko Strahija, who swam a school-record 1:44.5 in 1998. Strahija is a two-time Olympian. King's time also qualified him for the USA Nationals this summer. He also qualified for the USA Nationals in the 100 backstroke at the USA Swimming Grand Prix Meet held in Indianapolis. King was recognized as a 2004 Scholar-Athlete by the OSU Athletic Department for having a 3.0 grade-point average.
Coastal Carolina
CONWAY, S.C. -- Marilyn Testa, a junior on the women's track team from McDonald High, recently won the pole vault at the Big South Conference meet to help her team capture the team championship. Testa cleared 13 feet to eclipse her previous personal-best of 12-51/2. She injured her hamstring during the pole vault, but went on to place third in the javelin and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. Testa helped Coastal Carolina to sweep the Big South Conference triple crown with championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. She also competed in Penn Relays in the women's college championship division last week, and placed ninth in the pole vault by clearing 12-4. The winner was Stack Manuel of Arkansas with 13-91/2.
Wooster
WOOSTER -- Brianne Diorio, a senior infielder on the softball team from Cardinal Mooney High, capped her career on a successful note by finishing as the team's top hitter this season. Diorio started all 35 games and led the Scots in batting average (.292) and hits (33-for-113), and tied for the team lead in doubles with nine, as Wooster posted a 16-19 record, including 7-7 in the NCAC. She also contributed 16 runs and 12 RBIs.
Walsh
NORTH CANTON -- Natalie Voytek, a junior outfielder on the softball team from Lakeview High, led Walsh in stolen bases with eight and was batting .374, according to recent statistics.
Erin Sunseri, a senior on the women's tennis team from Boardman, teamed with Melissa Wilson for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles to help the Cavaliers beat Tiffin, 6-3, for a 10-4 record, including 2-1 in the Amerian Mideast Conference North.
Ed Bartolec, a senior pitcher on the baseball team from Poland, went the distance as the Cavaliers beat Malone, 8-2, in the nightcap of a recent doubleheader. Bartolec improved to 4-2.
Sara Piersante, a senior on the women's track team from Canfield, placed second in the 10,000 meters (39:11.38) at the AMC Championships held at Roberts Wesleyan College. She qualified provisionally for the national meet and helped the Cavaliers to place fourth.
Muskingum
NEW CONCORD -- Erin Zupko, a senior outfielder for the softball team from Liberty High, has been selected to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference team for the fourth straight year. Zupko, who led Muskingum to back-to-back undefeated seasons in OAC play for an 18-0 record, was picked to the All-OAC first team for the third time, after making the second team in 2001. She led the OAC in runs scored as of April 29 with 35.
Mount Union
ALLIANCE -- Ronda Barth, a junior third baseman on the softball team from Western Reserve High, was selected to the All-OAC second team.
Eleni Halkias, a freshman tennis player from Warren Harding High, was named second team All-OAC. Halkias, who plays No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, posted a 12-8 overall singles record this season, including 6-3 in the OAC. In doubles, she went 14-6 and 7-2. Halkias helped Mount Union to set a school record for most wins in one season with 11 against nine losses. The team went 5-4 in the OAC for fifth place.
President's Athletic Conference
NEW WILMINGTON -- Four area softball players -- Jennifer Pancake (Boardman) and Heidi Kimmel (Poland), both of Westminster; Emily Patton (Poland) of Bethany and Sarah McCoy (Beaver Local) of Thiel -- were named all-league for softball. Pancake, a freshman pitcher and designated hitter; Kimmel, a junior first baseman; and Patton, a sophomore outfielder, all made the first team while McCoy, a freshman outfielder, was picked to the second team. Pancake also was named PAC co-pitcher of the year to share the honor with two other pitchers, and freshman of the year.
