WARREN -- After spending four days correcting violations documented by city health inspectors, G's Golden Gate Restaurant can keep operating.
Inspectors last week conducted an inspection and found 77 violations from inadequate light and dust accumulation on a shelf to containers, utensils and the refrigerator encrusted with debris; no dates marked on some foods in the refrigerator and excessive grease accumulation and food debris on a stove, grill and two broilers.
The city health board last week gave the Parkman Road restaurant until Monday morning to correct the violations or face being shut down.
"All of our major concerns have been complied with," Mark Roberts, city food program coordinator, told health board members at a meeting Monday.
Minor concerns, such as a deteriorated rubber door gasket, are being addressed, Roberts said.
"They've done a fine job," he said.
Board vote
After hearing Roberts' report, health board members voted to allow the restaurant to continue to operate. Thomas "B.J." Letson, board member, said he wanted feedback every 60 days on the restaurant's health code compliance.
Michael Gianoutsos, the restaurant owner, said he's pleased with the outcome but believes the whole issue could have been handled with better communication.
"Everyone is invited to come and inspect for themselves at any time as long as we're open," Gianoutsos said. "We've been there for 70 years, and I'd like to be there for 70 more years."
Under state law, restaurants must be inspected at least twice yearly, but Robert Pinti, deputy health commissioner, said most restaurants in the city are inspected more often.
The restaurant also had been inspected in February and violations were documented at that time, Roberts said.
"We're going to work closely with them on a program to get them restarted on the right foot," Roberts said.
