Canfield's McKenney tames Struthers on 1 hit
Newton Falls remained unbeaten in the Trumbull Athletic Conference.
STRUTHERS -- Josh McKenney pitched a one-hitter and struck out 16 Monday as Canfield High blanked Struthers, 14-0, in a Metro Athletic Conference game baseball game.
With two outs in the sixth, Pat Walas of Struthers (4-11, 1-8) singled on an 0-2 pitch to break up McKenney's bid for a no-hitter. McKenney is 4-2.
Joe Pitzer hit a triple and two singles and drove in three runs for the Cardinals (19-3, 7-1).
Tim Novotny rapped three singles, scored twice and drove in a run. Dan Freed-Pastor hit two singles and drove in three runs to aid Canfield.
Newton Falls 6, Hubbard 3
NEWTON FALLS -- The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to remain unbeaten in the Trumbull Athletic Conference.
Andy Grunder came on in relief in the second inning for the Tigers (15-2, 10-0 TAC), and didn't allow a hit for six innings while striking out 13 to pick up the win.
Behind 3-2, the Tigers' Grunder (5-0) got the rally going in the seventh when he singled. He moved to second on a sacrifice by Mike Pelyak, then scored on a single by Billy McCartney.
Troy Balint beat out a grounder and Mike Staunton reached base on an error to load the bases.
Kirby Spahlinger then singled home McCartney and Balint, and Staunton scored on an error.
Girard 8, Champion 6
GIRARD -- There were 13 extra-base hits in the TAC game.
For the Indians (9-6), Greg Barton homered and doubled twice, and Ryan Collins, Nick Canterino and Matt Zuppo also homered.
Dan O'Neill, Tom Williams and Collins doubled for Girard.
Chris Palm and Brett Sulowen homered for Champion and Mike Harrison and Drew Szepietowski doubled.
West Branch 6, Chaney 5
BELOIT -- The Warriors (8-10) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Steve Hilliard went 3-for-3 with a double and Andy Todor (3-1) got the decision with three innings of one-hit relief.
Tom Orlando doubled for the Warriors and Ron Palowitz and Dave Baco doubled for the Cowboys (12-4).
Leetonia 13, Sebring 12
LEETONIA -- Kurt Williams hit a bases-loaded single in the seventh inning to break a 12-12 tie and give Leetonia the win in a Tri-County League game.
Shawn Ryan hit a two-run homer in the sixth for Leetonia to tie the score at 12.
Williams also had a two-run single, while Cody Tittle had four singles and two RBIs for the Bears ( 8-11, 5-8 TCL).
Jon Williams (3-0) was the winner in relief.
Sebring is 5-12, 3-10.
Lordstown 12, Bloomfield 6
NORTH BLOOMFIELD -- Zack Sutliff, Delone Davis, Kyle Schofer and Breten Gadson each had two hits for Lordstown (2-8).
A four-run second inning put Lordstown up 5-0.
Canton Heritage 12,Youngstown Christian 10
YOUNGSTOWN -- Canton Heritage scored seven runs in the top the seventh inning at Pemberton-Donnell Park.
Mark Pecchia hit a double and single, drove in four runs and scored once for the Eagles (6-2). Jared VanArsdale hit a double single and scored twice.
Matt Gulley hit three singles for Heritage Christian.
