Man's body identified
YOUNGSTOWN -- The body found floating in McKelvey Lake a week ago has been identified as David Greer, 32, of New Castle. Coroner David M. Kennedy ruled the death a homicide. Greer, who was shot to death, had been reported missing about six months ago, reports show. At 8:45 p.m. last Monday, a fisherman in the 3300 block of Oak Street spotted the body and called 911. Firefighters used a boat to recover it. The homicide would be the city's eighth this year unless the death occurred elsewhere.
Felony robbery charge
BOARDMAN -- A Youngstown woman was charged with felony robbery after being arrested at Wal-Mart on Doral Drive on Friday afternoon. According to police reports, Deana M. Lile, 46, of Ayshire Drive, tried to leave the Wal-Mart store with baby formula hidden in a shoulder tote. When store personnel tried to stop her, she pulled out a can of pepper spray, reports say. She is due in Boardman area court Tuesday morning.
Police find injured man
YOUNGSTOWN -- David Leaghty, 20, of Newton Falls was found by police behind the West Side Library on Mahoning Avenue around 2:50 a.m. Sunday with stab wounds to his right shoulder and back and a cut on his right hand. Two of his friends told police that they were walking behind the library when Leaghty ran up to them saying he had been shot or stabbed. The victim was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Reports don't give a motive. Police have a description of the suspect.
Heat lamp starts fire
CANFIELD -- A heat lamp warming six baby chicks apparently fell at 9:15 a.m. Saturday and ignited sawdust used for the chicks' bedding in a bedroom at 9940 Knauf Road, said Green Township Fire Chief Todd Baird. He estimated fire damage to the two-story house at $50,000. No injuries were reported. He did not know if the chicks survived. Baird said his firefighters received aid from fire departments in Canfield, Damascus, Perry and Ellsworth.
Students' art review
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city schools' Choffin Career and Technical Center will host a Commercial Art Portfolio Review from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday on the fourth floor of the center at 200 E. Wood St. Juniors and seniors will display the work they have accumulated throughout the school year to be judged by area artists. The community is invited to view artwork on display.
Choral concert planned
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city schools' music department will present a City-Wide Choral Concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Youngstown State University Beeghly Center. The event theme is the history of musical theater and will include music from Tin Pan Alley through contemporary Broadway. The 125-member junior high choir from four schools will perform "A Little Bit of Broadway," the 500-member elementary choir from 15 schools will perform "One Hundred Years of Broadway," and music awards will be presented. Admission is $3; tickets can be purchased at the door.
