Heat lamp starts fire
CANFIELD -- A heat lamp warming six baby chicks apparently fell at 9:15 a.m. Saturday and ignited sawdust used for the chicks bedding in a bedroom at 9940 Knauf Road, said Green Township Fire Chief Todd Baird.
He estimated fire damage to the two-story house at $50,000. No injuries were reported. He did not know if the chicks survived.
Baird said his firefighters received aid from fire departments in Canfield, Damascus, Perry and Ellsworth.
Burglary at restaurant
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A cement block was thrown through the door glass at Perkins Restaurant, 2945 E. Main St., sometime before 2:40 a.m. Sunday, when the burglary was discovered, said Deputy Chief Larry Matchack.
A small amount of cash and coins were taken from the register, he said.
Choral concert planned
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city schools' music department will present a City-Wide Choral Concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Youngstown State University Beeghly Center.
The event theme is the history of musical theater and will include music from Tin Pan Alley through contemporary Broadway.
The 125-member junior high choir from four schools will perform "A Little Bit of Broadway," the 500-member elementary choir from 15 schools will perform "One Hundred Years of Broadway," and music awards will be presented.
Admission is $3; tickets can be purchased at the door.
Students' art review
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city schools' Choffin Career and Technical Center will host a Commercial Art Portfolio Review from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday on the fourth floor of the center at 200 E. Wood St.
Juniors and seniors will display the work they have accumulated throughout the school year to be judged by area artists.
The community is invited to view artwork on display at the show.
Drop off unwanted tires
BROOKFIELD -- Anyone looking to get rid of unwanted tires can do so for free by bringing their unrimmed tires to the Brookfield Township Road Department on Saturday between 8 a.m. and noon.
Trustee John Schmidt said people from areas surrounding Brookfield are also welcome.
Atheists honor director
ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) -- An Altoona atheist has been named state director of the year by the American Atheists Inc.
Lorie Polansky, the New Jersey-based group's Western Pennsylvania regional director, was honored at the American Atheists' national convention last month in San Diego.
Polansky converted her mother's former barbershop into the Atheist Station in Gallitzin. In February, she led a protest at a Huntingdon County church that was hosting the Rev. George M. Docherty. Many people credit a 1954 sermon by the Rev. Mr. Docherty with inspiring President Dwight Eisenhower and others to add "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance.
