This 90-minute documentary, "The Opposite Sex: Rene's Story" (9 p.m., Showtime), explores the controversies facing people who have sex changes. Rene, biologically a female at birth, has passed for a man all during adulthood. Now Rene opts for surgery to complete the gender transition, a move that profoundly affects many people.
Another view of California is the focus of this new documentary, "Golden Gate Bridge" (9 p.m., PBS). The bridge, completed after 18 years of struggles, opened May 27, 1937. Nearly 200,000 people celebrated its arrival by walking, skating or cycling across its length. The program spotlights Joseph Strauss, who took up the challenge of the bridge.
