WARREN -- A man drove away in a delivery truck of Duffy's Pizza after showing a handgun and stealing $150 from the cash register, police said. The man walked into the Larchmont Avenue pizza shop around 3 p.m. Saturday and demanded that a clerk open the cash register and go into a storage room. After taking the money, he grabbed keys for the pickup truck and left.
Fund-raiser planned
CHAMPION -- The Trumbull Career and Technical Center Levy Renewal Committee will have a Swiss steak dinner fund-raiser from 5 to 7 p.m. May 13 in the school cafeteria. Shields Road closing
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Engineer's Office will close a portion of Shields Road, between East Newport and Sheban drives in Boardman Township, for replacement of a bridge over Mill Creek. The road will close May 10 and remain closed until Aug. 20. Detours will be posted during that time.
Honors banquet setfor Warren students
WARREN -- The School Improvement Committee of Warren City Schools will sponsor an honors banquet for honor roll students who participate in the Renaissance program. The banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Demetrios Community Center, 3223 Atlantic St. N.E. The committee has awarded 216 gold cards to students with a 4.0 grade-point average or higher; 383 red cards to those with a 3.5 to 3.99 GPA; and 185 white cards to students with a 3.2 to 3.49 GPA. The Renaissance Program was started in 1991 to reward students for academic success. At the end of each grade period, each honor roll student at Warren G. Harding High School and Trumbull Career and Technical Center may apply for a Renaissance card. The card provides a variety of incentives with local sponsors.
Landfill foes to meet
HUBBARD -- Hubbard Environmental & amp; Land Preservation will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township administration building. HELP is a citizens group against the proposed landfill in the township.
Man is found deadat his mother's home
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Matthew McKenna, who was shot by Sharon police in March, was found dead Friday in his mother's home in Meadville, police said. Officers found nothing to indicate how he died. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. McKenna, 23, of Wengler Avenue, Sharon, was shot in the neck March 20 by a Sharon police officer who responded to a domestic violence call. Police said McKenna tried to run over the officer with his car. McKenna, who had been hospitalized for a few days, had been charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
Girl in coma dies
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- A girl left in a coma after she nearly drowned in a swimming hole almost six years ago has died. Olena Hodakovsky died of cardiac arrest Friday at an Erie hospital, according to Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook. Olena had been in a coma since July 3, 1998, when she almost drowned in a pond in Girard, Pa., about 115 miles north of Pittsburgh. She was 5 when she wandered away from a family picnic and was found face-down in the water.
