Moraine
Programs highlighting state symbols and certain birds, as well as an exhibit, are on tap for early May at Moraine State Park, near Portersville, Pa. For more information about Moraine programs, call Heidi Solley at (724) 368-3612.
"Natural Symbols of Pennsylvania": A naturalist will discuss what symbols represent the state bird, dog, tree and flower, as well as what they mean and how they were selected. Meet at 1 p.m. today in the Pleasant Valley picnic area on the South Shore.
"Welcome Bluebirds": A naturalist will meet people from 11 a.m. to noon May 9 at the McDanels Launch on the North Shore to look at the lifestyle of these birds. This event also will include a walk along part of the Moraine State Park Bluebird Trail.
"Muddy Creek Oil Well Exhibit": This free event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday to May 9. The antique oil well restoration project recently won the Historic Harmony Heritage Award. The exhibit is open to the public, and to get to the well site, take old U.S. Route 422 west from the Prospect interchange and proceed a half-mile beyond the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources office and the parking lot at the boat-launch area. Volunteers will be on hand as tour guides. An hourlong program will start at 1 p.m.
