Officials seek volunteers to help to clean up Leetonia

LEETONIA -- Leetonia and Columbiana County Recycling and Litter Prevention officials are seeking volunteers willing to arm themselves with trash bags May 8 to pick up litter throughout the village.
Volunteers are to meet at the rear of village hall at 7:30 a.m. to clean up around the village parks and other areas of town.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said the cleanup effort is a joint project of village officials and the recycling and litter prevention office.
Phillips and Cindy DePillo, director of the recycling and litter prevention office, are encouraging individual residents and community groups to participate. Phillips said members of the Leetonia Parks Board and the Leetonia Ruritan Club have already pledged their support.
Trash bags will be provided by the recycling and litter prevention office and participants will receive T-shirts, he said.
Phillips emphasized that although surrounding communities are having cleanup days where the municipality picks up appliances, furniture and other unwanted items left by residents, the emphasis of the May 8 event is recycling and litter prevention and will not include any clean up of any private property.
Any discarded items or trash on private property will not be picked up, he added.
