NCAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT Area athletes have stake in semifinal



Ohio Wesleyan has three area players on its roster.

WOOSTER -- Several Youngstown-area players will be involved in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament semifinal baseball series between the College of Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan.
Evan Agona (Ursuline) is a senior outfielder for Wooster, which will play host to Ohio Wesleyan today in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. to begin the best-of-3 playoff series. A deciding game will be played Sunday at 1 p.m., if necessary.
Ohio Wesleyan has three area players -- Michael Krieger, sophomore pitcher from Boardman; Brad Whitman, senior second baseman from Canfield; and Paul Suhar, junior catcher from Canfield.
Agona helped the Scots win their fourth straight NCAC East Division championship and compile a 31-8 record, including 15-3 in the NCAC.
Krieger, Whitman and Suhar helped Ohio Wesleyan to place second in the NCAA West Division and a 23-15 record, including 11-5 in the NCAC.
The Wooster-Ohio Wesleyan winner will face the winner of the other semifinal series between Denison (29-5, 14-2) and Allegheny (21-12, 10-4) in the championship series May 6-7.
Agona started 23 games and batted .350 (21-for-60) with four doubles, two homers, 18 RBIs and 20 runs.
Krieger has a 5-3 record and 2.93 ERA, and leads the team in strikeouts with 36 and has walked nine. He has 13 appearances covering 46 innings.
Whitman, a part-time starter, is batting .327 (16-for-49) with 15 runs and seven RBIs. He has played in 27 games, starting 17.
Suhar has been used primarily in a back-up role. He is batting .286 (4-for-14) with three runs and two RBIs.
