CORTLAND -- Lakeview High's boys and girls captured titles Saturday at the eighth Lakeview Invitational track and field meet.
The boys won with 109 points, while defending champion Warren John F. Kennedy was second with 80. The Bulldogs girls defended their title with 114 points, well ahead of runner-up Aurora with 80.
Shane Golden of Kennedy won the 100-meter dash at the tape in 11.3 seconds. Nate Province of Lakeview was second, also in 11.3.
"I tried to get out of the blocks quick and do my best," said Golden. "It was kind of a good day to run.
"It was like a practice meet, getting ready for the county meet Tuesday for the big boys," said Golden. "There were some good schools here with some good sprinters from Lakeview and I knew it wasn't going to be easy."
One-two in hurdles
Seniors Justin Rush (14.8) and Ryan Kuppler (15.6) of Lakeview placed 1-2 in the 110 high hurdles.
"We both go out and try as hard as we can to run our best race," said Kuppler.
"We push each other a lot, knowing we have the same ability," said Rush.
Veteran thrower Steve Burkholder of Champion won the shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 3 inches.
"I am surprised that I won," said Burkholder, who had an off day in the discus throw.
Lakeview's J. Province was first in the high jump (5-10) and the long jump (20-8 1/4), while Alynn Martin, Heather Wasylink, Rachel Taddie and Katie Betts won the 4x200 relay (1:49.4).
Wasylink, a senior, said, "Our first hand-off was bad, but we have four great runners that made up for that.
"There were some teams we hadn't run against before, so were happy that we won it."
Betts also won the 100 (12.9), the 200 (26.6) and anchored the 4x100 relay (52.0).
Girls' hurdles winner
Danyelle Newman of East Palestine took first place in the 100 high hurdles (15.8).
"I didn't know what the outcome would be, I just wanted to do my best," she said.
Newman said that she has won the hurdles three straight years at the Tri-County League meet and that her immediate goal was to win a fourth time.
Tracee Gruskiewicz of Pymatuning Valley won the 1600 (5:29.3) and the 3200 (11:48.9).
Angeline Cicero of Warren JFK won the 300 hurdles (47.2) and teammate Jenna Brian placed first in the discus with a throw of 123-6.
