Clippers, Spartans split doubleheader



Mooney swept a twinbill while Poland upended Ursuline.
BOARDMAN -- The Columbiana High baseball team scored seven times in the seventh inning to defeat Boardman, 10-3.
The Spartans (9-10) won a second game, 9-6.
In the first contest, Ryan Schmidt had two hits and Brian Gustafson two RBIs for Columbiana (16-4).
For the Spartans, Dan Ford and Kevin Sikora had three hits each.
In the nightcap, Ford homered and doubled for the Spartans. Columbiana's Joe Rupert homered and doubled.

STRUTHERS -- Two errors helped the Cardinals score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Ian Babyak and John Grist tripled for Mooney.
In the nightcap, Dan Young had three hits and Kevin Drummond two for the Cardinals. Tony Brunetti tossed the four-hit shutout.
Poland 10, Ursuline 5
STRUTHERS -- Chris Aracich's three hits drove in three runs for the Bulldogs (10-5). One of his hits was a double.
Adam Wigley also had three hits including a double. Tom Clayton doubled twice and drove in two runs.
Winning pitcher Zach Horvath allowed two hits over five innings.
Girard 9, LaBrae 7
GIRARD -- Senior Joe Castor tossed a six-hitter and doubled in two runs during the non-league game at Tod Park. Castor struck out five and walked six during 62/3 innings for Girard (8-6).
Nick Cretella pitched to one batter and retired LaBrae's final batter to fly out to center field.
Castor had his two-run double during Girard's three-run fifth inning when Nick Canterino's double scored Greg Barton from second base to snap a 5-5 tie.
Canterino, a senior, finished 3-for-4 with two doubles; Ryan Collin, a junior, went 2-for-4 with a double; and Barton, a senior, was 2-for-3.
