Angels place Tim Salmon on disabled list

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Anaheim Angels placed designated hitter Tim Salmon on the 15-day disabled list with irritation in his left knee Saturday. The move was retroactive to Friday.
Salmon, 10 homers away from becoming the 25th active player to reach 300, had been mired in a 4-for-31 slump and is batting just .188. He became the primary DH this season after starting the last 11 in right field.
The Angels purchased the contract of right-hander Matt Hensley from Triple-A Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League. Because Hensley wasn't on the 40-man roster, the Angels also designated left-hander Yoshitaka Mizuo for assignment.
Salmon, who didn't play Friday night, has had knee problems in the past but this injury is something new, according to manager Mike Scioscia.
"The old stuff is doing nicely, but this is kind of a little different area," Scioscia said. "What they're prescribing now is rest."
Hensley, who was 8-12 with a 4.89 ERA for Salt Lake last season, has allowed just one run in 151/3 innings of relief this season with three walks and 17 strikeouts.
