JOHN KOVACH | Colleges Evans winds up career at Lehigh

BOARDMAN -- George Evans is thinking about becoming a college track coach and teacher.
But the Lehigh University senior sprinter from Boardman High still isn't sure if that's what he wants to do, so he plans to do some exploring.
"I want to see if I like it," said Evans, a senior who will graduate in May and then try for graduate school and a graduate assistant track coaching job some where, while studying history or English education.
And if Evans can develop sprinters to do what he has done, he has a good chance of finding success in his chosen field.
Three school records
A four-year member of the Lehigh indoor and outdoor track teams, Evans has been involved in three school records, one of them also being a Patriot League mark.
He broke the school indoor 55- and 60-meter dash records in 6.35 and 6.83 seconds, respectively, and was part of the record-breaking outdoor 4x100 relay (41.29).
Evans' 60 meters record was set last February at the Patriot League Indoor Championships and it also turned out to be a meet mark. He made the All-Patriot League team for the third time.
And last weekend, at the East Coast Athletic Conference championships at Boston University, Evans placed third in the 55 meters (6.39) to make the All-ECAC first team.
Evans (5-foot-9, 160 pounds) also played four years of football at Lehigh as a wide receiver, participating in nine games last season and catching nine passes for 170 yards.
But he believes he is doing better in track this year because his football career is over and he has more time to devote to track.
"I'm not having the extra weightlifting and morning workouts [in football]," said Evans, who had to limit his outdoor track season because of spring football practice.
"I wouldn't run outdoor meets until after spring practice was over in April, so the track team would have a month under its belt and I would just be getting started."
Now home on spring break, Evans will begin to gauge his interest in coaching track by helping his former Boardman coach, Dave Pavlansky, during the Spartans' preseason practice.
While at Boardman, Evans ran track as a sprinter for only his senior season, but played football as a wide receiver for four years.
Evans is the son of Peggy and Taylor Evans, and has a brother, Jeffrey, who is a freshman at Duquesne University.
Irish brothers teammates
MOUNT VERNON -- Brothers Jason and Kyle Irish, graduates of Lakeview High, are teammates on the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team.
Jason is a senior right-handed pitcher and captain who has returned to the Cougars' starting rotation after bypassing last season.
Part of the reason for his return was to join Kyle, a freshman right-hander, on the team.
In 2002, Jason Irish posted a 4-2 record with a 5.44 ERA. He started Mount Vernon Nazarene's season opener two weekends ago against Capital.
He pitched 51/3 innings and struck out three, allowing five hits, three walks and three runs.
