Howland schools attractopen-enrollment pupils
HOWLAND -- There will be 72 open-enrollment pupils in the Howland school system as of Aug. 30, the first day of the 2004-05 school year. According to Superintendent John Rubesich, 48 of the pupils are from Warren. Most of them live on the east side of Warren, which borders the Howland school district boundaries. This is the first year of open enrollment for Howland. For each open-enrollment pupil Howland accepts, it will receive $5,236 from the pupil's home district. For each pupil living in the district, the state gives Howland $1,000, officials said.
Rte. 82 ramp closed
VIENNA -- The state Route 82 westbound ramp to state Route 11 south will be closed from noon to 6 p.m. today for painting. This is part of a $30,000 project to repair the southbound side of state Route 11 over the westbound state Route 82 bridge. The work is to be completed this summer.
Group plans fund-raiser
HUBBARD -- Hubbard Environmental & amp; Land Preservation, a citizens group opposing a planned landfill in Hubbard Township, will meet at 7 p.m. July 7 in Hubbard City Council Chambers. The Village Tavern is challenging other tavern operators to maintain a collection can in their establishments as part of fund-raising effort to defray HELP's legal expenses. A can may be obtained by calling HELP, (330) 360-9449. Plans are being made for a garage sale Aug. 12 and 13 at St. Patrick Church to raise money. Those interested in volunteering or making donations such as baked goods should contact HELP.
Board meeting canceled;community meeting set
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield Board of Education has canceled its regular July 21 meeting and has instead scheduled a community meeting for 7 p.m. July 20 in the high school auditorium. Schools treasurer Angela Lewis will explain the status of the district's finances, under a state fiscal caution. The district is seeking approval of a 5.5-mill emergency levy in a special election Aug. 3. The levy would generate $538,168 a year. New schools Superintendent Michael Hanshaw will also be at the session. Hanshaw takes over after being Mineral Ridge High School principal to replace Superintendent Rocco Adduci, who is leaving the district Aug. 1 to be superintendent in Niles. A reception is planned after the community meeting.
Girl Scouts teen training
NILES -- Girl Scouts of Lake to River Council has openings for volunteers for the Teens-n-Training Day Camp. Volunteers can also be non-Girl Scouts. The camp will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 26 to July 28, at Waddell Park in Niles. Teens-n-Training Day Camp is for girls age 7 and older. The cost is $30, and includes a T-shirt. Memorial garden
LIBERTY -- A memorial garden is being established at Churchill Park. A loved one can be remembered with the purchase of a boulder with an engraved plaque for $250 or a paver with 20 characters for $50. Proceeds will be used to maintain and expand the garden. Flaggers to move traffic
FARMINGTON -- Flaggers will maintain traffic with lane restrictions on state Route 88 from the Geauga County line to state Route 45 in Farmington and Bristol townships from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. today through Friday as crack sealing takes place, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced.
Historical society needsvolunteers for projects
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Historical Society is seeking volunteers for projects ranging from gardening to guiding tours. An informational meeting for those interested in docent training is slated for 11 a.m. July 8. A meeting for those interested in microfilming newspapers will be at 1 a.m. July 10. Both meetings will be in the social hall of the Helen Black Miller Memorial Chapel, next to the historical society headquarters, 119 S.
