Council OKs raise
STRUTHERS -- City council unanimously approved an ordinance granting a 3 percent pay raise retroactive to Jan. 1 to the part-time driver for the recycling collection program, bringing his current hourly rate to $8.36, during a special meeting Monday evening. No fringe benefits are provided.
YSU tour for students
YOUNGSTOWN -- "YSU Preview," a program designed for high school juniors and seniors in the midst of the college search process, will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon July 10 on the Youngstown State University campus. After breakfast in Kilcawley Center, students, parents and other guests will hear presentations on YSU's academic programs, meet current YSU students and go on a campus tour, including a visit to the Cafaro House residence hall. Turtles are missing
STRUTHERS -- Two turtles that captivated neighborhood children have disappeared, and the owner thinks one or more of the kids could be responsible. Police said the owner, a Grandview Avenue man, discovered the two box turtles missing from his fenced-in back yard about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. He told police the turtles roam around inside the fence during daylight hours and that numerous children often come to see them. The owner has had the turtles 12 years and last saw them when he placed them in the fenced yard about noon Saturday. Value of the animals is estimated at $100 each.
Bar association
YOUNGSTOWN -- Atty. Clair M. Carlin was installed as president of the Mahoning County Bar Association during the organization's annual election banquet Monday at the Youngstown Country Club. Atty. Richard N. White was honored for serving as president during the past year. Atty. Richard B. Blair was named Lawyer of the Year for his work as a mediator for Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Distinguished service awards were given to attorneys Jerilyn Goldberg Mercer and Daniel L. Rossi. Atty. Harold Stein was recognized for 65 years of service to the legal profession. Honored for 55 years were attorneys Myron J. Nadler, John Weed Powers, Henry C. Robinson, Joseph P. Sontich Sr. and Judge Clyde W. Osborne. Honored for 50 years were attorneys Joseph S. Donchess, Vincent E. Gilmartin, Richard C. Ross and Judge Robert J. Kalafut.
Dog complaint
AUSTINTOWN -- A 50-year-old woman who lives in the 6200 block of Kirk Road called police Monday to report that her rooster had been killed by her neighbor's dog. The woman told police she looked out her window around 3 p.m. and noticed the dog, a miniature chow, attacking the rooster. She took pictures, then called police, who are investigating.
Route 82 ramp closed
VIENNA -- The state Route 82 westbound ramp to state Route 11 south will be closed from noon to 6 p.m. today for painting. This is part of a $30,000 project to repair the southbound side of state Route 11 over the westbound state Route 82 bridge. The work is to be completed this summer.
Group plans fund-raiser
HUBBARD -- Hubbard Environmental & amp; Land Preservation, a citizens group opposing a planned landfill in Hubbard Township, will meet at 7 p.m. July 7 in Hubbard City Council Chambers. The Village Tavern is challenging other tavern operators to maintain a collection can in their establishments as part of fund-raising effort to defray HELP's legal expenses. A can may be obtained by calling HELP, (330) 360-9449. Plans are being made for a garage sale Aug. 12 and 13 at St. Patrick Church to raise money. Those interested in volunteering or making donations such as baked goods should contact HELP.
Memorial garden
LIBERTY -- A memorial garden is being established at Church Hill Park. A loved one can be remembered with the purchase of a boulder with an engraved plaque for $250 or a paver with 20 characters for $50. Proceeds will be used to maintain and expand the garden.
