SANDLOTS Hallapy helps Mink Financial hold off late rally for 6-5 win
Roth Brothers upset league-leading Wharmby, 5-1.
STRUTHERS -- Ryan Hallapy's two hits included a two-run double as Mink Financial hung on for a 6-5 win Sunday over Koch Construction/Line Drive Academy in Class B baseball action at Cene Park.
Hallapy's double was part of a four-run uprising that put Mink (15-9) ahead, 6-1.
Jeremy Hartman picked up his third win and Jay Yorty earned his first save. Dave Piersante's two hits included a double.
For Koch/Line, Adam Zakowski had two hits while Dom Modarelli hit a two-run triple in the seventh inning. Tom Enyeart suffered the loss, his third in six decisions. Koch/Line (16-9) is assured of a Connie Mack berth.
Roth Brothers 5, Wharmby 1
Jeff Claar (3-2) tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts as Roth upset league-leading Wharmby.
Ben Mackall had two hits while Claar and Paul Kalman added doubles for Roth (4-20). Mackall drove in two runs with a hit in the four-run Roth third inning.
Jake Gross, Pat Oman and Rudy Pekarovic doubled for Wharmby (20-5) while John Warren (1-2) struck out four and allowed three earned runs in taking the complete-game loss.
Livi Steel 4, Youngstown Express 0
Behind the three-hit shutout pitching of Mike Busin, Livi Steel improved to 18-6. Busin had two strikeouts in winning his second game on the season.
Shawn Carr had a double and a single while Mark Tanner and Brian Youchak doubled for the winners.
Pat Smith (0-7) went the distance for the Express (2-23). He had four strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Sugar Excavating 7,Rondinelli Tuxedo 3
Sugar Excavating scored four runs in the fifth inning and dealt a serious blow to Rondinelli's postseason chances.
Troy Ruminski (1-1) had three strikeouts in a complete-game victory for Sugar (8-17).
Ethan Taylor had three hits and Keith Patton and Joel Imler two hits each. For Rondinelli (13-12) Ryan Jones took the loss to fall to 0-2. He had three hits, including a triple and a double, while Cameron Cimino added two hits.
Rondinelli has to win its last two games and get help to reach the playoffs.
Astro Falcons 13,Youngstown Propane 2
Jared Bartholomew had four hits while Frank Turocy and Chad Baker added three each.
Astro (19-6) got a complete-game four-hitter from Mike Ellis (4-0). He allowed no earned runs and struck out six.
Turocy had two doubles, Bartholomew a double and a triple, and Baker a three-run home run. Adam Wigley added two singles.
For Propane (8-16), Craig Osborne had two hits. Astro is one game behind Wharmby and the two meet on Wednesday, the final night of the regular season.
Class AA
Jared Bogan had three hits as part of Youngstown Metros' 13-hit attack in their 9-5 victory over Gibson-Governor Insurance on Sunday.
Dean Polumbaro, Gary Hinckson and Ryan Vaughn all had two hits, including doubles, for the Metros.
Brock Oros and John Shiraldi had two hits each for GGI.
Champion Molded Plastics 12,Action Sports Apparel 2
John Grabowski, Chris Green and Chris Dunn all had two hits for CMP, while Ryan Dillon doubled. Grabowski, Dunn and Phil Butch all had two RBIs. Ray Jamminet homered for ASA.
MTC Knights 14, Muscle Works 3
Mike Rupinsky, who doubled, and Matt Yartz had three hits each for MTC, which totaled 18 for the game. Jim Skiffey also doubled, while Don Stephenson, Derek Stanton, Torrie Frangiamore, Jason Lee and Austen Musick all had two hits. Marc Vertock struck out eight in six innings.
Bazetta-Cortland Optimists 11,Shevies 2
Steve Boxler pitched a complete game, striking out seven, and had two singles for the Optimists. Greg Bungo had three hits and three RBIs, while Dave Miller singled twice and Drew Mascioli doubled and drove in three runs. Josh Miller singled twice and doubled for Shevies.
