Greyhound to cut backservice to small towns
DALLAS -- Greyhound Lines Inc. will stop bus service to many small towns between Chicago and Seattle to cut costs and focus on its most profitable routes.
The company said it would close 260 stops, leaving 99 in its 13-state northern region effective Aug. 18.
Greyhound will make similar changes in other regions over the next two to three years, said chief executive Stephen E. Gorman.
"Starting in the summer of 2001, Greyhound started seeing a decline, particularly in the long haul," Gorman said. "That decline accelerated after Sept. 11 (2001), and we needed to cut overhead."
SBC Communications,union reach agreement
CHICAGO -- SBC Communications Inc. said Sunday it had reached a tentative agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers on a five-year contract, averting a strike by some 11,500 SBC workers in Illinois and northwestern Indiana.
Negotiators for the IBEW and San Antonio-based SBC met last week in the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates in an effort to resolve differences over health care costs and job security.
The Communications Workers of America, which represents 100,000 SBC employees, reached a tentative agreement with SBC last month after a four-day walkout.
