PENNSYLVANIA Violations found in inspections of trash trucks

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- State inspectors said they found four violations of environmental regulations during a surprise inspection of trash trucks stopped at the Tri-County Industries transfer station in Pine and Liberty Townships.
Citations were issued against the individual haulers, not against Tri-County, according to the Department of Environmental Protection.
Inspectors checked 35 trucks at the transfer station Wednesday and found four violations, said Kelly Burch, DEP regional director.
The inspections are part of an ongoing effort to improve the safety of trucks hauling waste in Pennsylvania. Trash haulers must get authorization from DEP through Act 90, the state's Waste Transportation Safety Act, to haul trash in Pennsylvania. DEP inspectors look at compliance history and if outstanding violations exist or there is an inability to comply with Act 90 regulations, the state can revoke authorization.
Inspectors also look for sign violations; drivers' not properly managing the waste during transportation; fire extinguisher violations; leaking loads; not having proper covers over the waste; trucks being overweight or otherwise overloaded; and logbook or record-keeping violations.
Violations found Wednesday included leakage from a vehicle and problems with a sign, Burch said.
