WARREN -- Ground was broken in recent weeks on a convenience store and gas station near the Mahoning Avenue Giant Eagle.
"We're excited about a fall of '04 grand opening," said Brian Frey, marketing assistant in corporate communications at Giant Eagle Inc., Pittsburgh.
The facility, called a GetGo, will be to the north of the Giant Eagle store in the Jamestown Village Plaza, Mahoning Avenue. A Red Barn restaurant, which burned down, formerly sat on the site.
According to the Giant Eagle Web site, GetGo is a product of Crossroads Convenience LLC, a joint venture between the grocery store chain and the owners of Guttman Enterprises, a Belle Vernon, Pa.-based convenience store operator.
The convenience store, with gas pumps in front, will offer grab-and go food including prepared sandwiches and gourmet salads, fountain drinks and bakery items, prepared fresh daily, Frey said.
Drawings of the site show a 1,895-square-foot store with six fuel pumps near Mahoning.
Giant Eagle started the GetGo concept in 2002 and opened the first Ohio location in Canton in April 2003. The company operates 52 GetGos with 21 in Ohio, one in Canfield and one in the Churchill Commons in Liberty.
Frey said locations are selected based on customer demand and vehicular traffic.
"We're always examining opportunities for store growth in GetGo as well as in Giant Eagle," he said.
