HUBBARD -- The Outcasts Car Club will have Cruisin' 2004, a fund-raiser for military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan, from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Truck World Mall & amp; Globe Restaurant. The rain date is July 18.
The club will donate its proceeds from a raffle and registration fees to the troops. Music will be provided by Magical Spins. Also, participants are asked to bring donations for the troops of items such as crossword puzzles, playing cards, grooming items, sewing kits, lip balm, tissues, eye drops, batteries, individually wrapped snack items, writing materials, and food items such as small boxes of cereal, granola bars, breakfast bars, energy bars, instant coffee, sunflower seeds, peanuts, raisins, beef jerky, and canned fruit and pudding with pop top cans.
Boy faces charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a 10-year-old boy Friday for felony receiving stolen property after he was caught driving a stolen car around 5 p.m. on the South Side. Another victim also identified the boy as having stolen her car earlier in the day and abandoning it at Indianola and Market Street.
Cops cite vendorfor not having license
YOUNGSTOWN -- Based on a complaint from the city finance department, Bennie Greene was issued a citation Thursday charging him with not having a peddlers/vendors permit. Police said they found Greene, 49, of Redondo Avenue, sitting in a lawn chair at Belmont and Guadalupe avenues, next to a display of shoes and clothing with sale tags. Greene told police he didn't have his peddlers/vendors permit with him.
Timber harvesting
GIRARD -- The city board of control awarded a timber harvesting contract Friday to Gustavus Hardwoods of Gustavus Township. Gustavus will pay the city 60 percent of the revenue generated from harvesting trees on city-owned property.
Rainy weather resultsin changes at rib fest
NILES -- Stormy weather Thursday has resulted in some schedule changes at the 20th annual Mahoning Valley Rib Burn Off in the Eastwood Field complex behind Eastwood Mall. The Earthquakers, a rock band that plays covers of 1970s and 80s songs, did not perform Thursday night because of rain and lightning. Now the band will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, event promoter Dominic Baragona said. Fireworks also were canceled Thursday night, so tonight's display will be bigger, Baragona added.
Teachers approvenew contract
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Teachers in the West Middlesex Area School District have ratified a new contract.
Terms of the package won't be revealed until the school board approves the agreement. The board is set to vote at 7 p.m. Monday.
John Harper, chief negotiator for the 75 teachers covered by the pact, said the union reviewed and voted on the package Friday, accepting it in a 56-12 vote.
The teachers worked the entire last school year under an extension of their old agreement.
Negotiations began on this pact in January 2003.
Youngstown policearrest 2 men while serving warrants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested two men while serving two separate search warrants Friday.
Benjiman Mayes, 23, of Tyrell Street, was arrested just before 4 p.m. at a house in the 900 block of Ridge Avenue. According to police, officers found 31 individually wrapped bags of suspected cocaine, marijuana and an unloaded handgun on Ridge in the house. He is charged with aggravated trafficking in cocaine and drug abuse marijuana.
Several hours later, police arrested Gary Carter, 43, of Labelle Street. According to police reports, Carter was found hiding in a closest at the Labelle Street home. Officers, reports say, found two bags of suspected crack on the floor near where he was hiding. Carter is charged with felony trafficking in crack cocaine.
