Best Bets on TV tonight

In "The Shawshank Redemption" (6 p.m., Lifetime), the hero is a strong-willed prisoner who naturally contends he was wrongly accused. Other characters include the well-connected prisoner who can get his hands on almost anything for a price, the sadistic prisoners, the even more sadistic guards, the corrupt warden and so on. What makes this all seem fresh is the film's unusual tone. It is both resigned and inspirational, grittily realistic and vaguely surreal, matter-of-fact and operatic.
"Artificial Intelligence: AI" (8 p.m., ABC), Steven Spielberg's 2001 film, makes its broadcast debut. It's the story of an artificial boy (Haley Joel Osment) programmed to love his human "mother" (Frances O'Connor). He wants to become fully human so she'll return his love. Parents should note that the movie has potentially disturbing aspects, and this version is rated TV-14.
"Everyday People" (9 p.m., HBO) is a gentle, insightful film about a Brooklyn diner, its workers and its customers. What will be the impact on each of them when its owner decides to close up shop and sell the property to a large-scale developer? "Everyday People" pits personal priorities against the welfare of the community while it explores the tensions between business and friendship. Directed by Jim McKay ("Girls Town," "Our Song"), the film was an official selection at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
Jamie Lee Curtis and the getting-more-famous-all-the-time Lindsay Lohan star in "Freaky Friday" (9 p.m., Starz) as a mother and her daughter who get stuck in each other's bodies. It's an old story, but both turned in winning performances.
