MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield school board learned from treasurer Angela Lewis that the projected carryover for fiscal year 2004 will be about $50,000 less than anticipated.
Lewis told the board the 2005 carryover balance is expected to be $338,721 for the year, which ends Wednesday.
The board approved Wednesday transferring $200,000 from the Emergency Levy Fund to the General Fund to provide for the emergency requirements of the school district and prevent a deficit in the General Fund.
The district is still in a fiscal caution set by the state.
Lewis told the board the district should be able to make it through next year, but, she added, without levy approval, the district would be in financial emergency status.
The district is seeking approval of a 5.5 mill emergency levy during a special election Aug. 3. The levy would generate $538,168 a year.
Honoring Adduci
In other business, board presented outgoing Superintendent Rocco Adduci with a plaque commending him for his four years of "exemplary service" to the district.
School board president Dr. Douglas Darnall said: "We have come a long way now. We have all-day kindergarten when we only had half-day before. We have expanded the gifted program. We have raised funds and built the Joe Lane Sports Complex. We have expanded Seaborn Elementary School, and we have saved almost $1 million in a very difficult financial time."
Adduci will leave as superintendent on Aug. 1 when he takes over the Niles superintendent's post. He plans a week's vacation in July and will then work at both Mineral Ridge and Niles.
A special board meeting has been called for Aug. 5 in the high school media center when new Superintendent Michael Hanshaw will take the reins.
Hiring
The board also approved the hiring of the following: Brenda Buckner as cafeteria supervisor for $18,000 a year with no benefits; Tracey Rummel as middle school special education teacher at a rate of $30,959; Susan Owens as K-8 general music/chorus teacher at $26,565 a year.
The board also hired two laid-off bus drivers to work in the cafeteria. Shelly Rummell will be a cook at Mineral Ridge High School at $17,087 a year, and Michelle White will be a cook at Seaborn Elementary School at the same pay rate.
