Teen's gun, drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gary Ryan, 17, of Kenmore Avenue was arrested at 10:50 p.m. Thursday on gun and drug charges after the car he was riding in was stopped on the East Side for having no front license plate and no light on the rear plate. Police said Ryan had a loaded .32-caliber revolver in his right rear pants pocket and a small bag of suspected marijuana in the right front pants pocket. Police said Ryan had two pick-up orders issued by juvenile court for his failure to appear at a court hearing. He was taken to the juvenile justice center to face charges of carrying a concealed weapon and drug abuse of marijuana.
Man sues police
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man is suing city police for more than $1 million, saying he was wrongly stopped, searched and cited for drug and traffic violations last summer. Richard Jack of Signal Road, Columbiana, filed the lawsuit Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The suit says Jack was pulled over June 29, 2003, on Marshall Street, just off Interstate 680, and cited on charges including felony drug possession. The charges were later dismissed in Youngstown Municipal Court.
Woman's car stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 54-year-old Campbell woman had a gun put to her head around 5 p.m. Thursday when she stopped at the stop sign at Almyra and Firnley avenues, reports show. The gunman, likely 15 to 18 years old, ordered her out of her car, a 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass, and threatened to shoot her in the head if she touched her purse. The woman told police she got out and the gunman drove off in her car.
Tire collection drive
GREENFORD -- Green Township trustees will have a tire collection drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 17 at the Green Township Recycling site behind the fire station in Greenford. This collection is open to everyone.
The cost is as follows:
U16-inch tire or smaller, no charge (no businesses).
U16-inch tire on a rim, 25 cents.
UTires larger than 16 inches, $5 per tire.
UTires larger than 16 inches on a rim, $6.50 per tire.
Black Civil War vets
YOUNGSTOWN -- Local Civil War historian Steffon Jones will be leading a tour of black Civil War veterans' graves at noon Saturday in Oak Hill Cemetery on Oak Hill Avenue across from Oakhill Renaissance Place. The tour will include information about the lives of the men buried there. Those wishing to attend should assemble at the cemetery entrance. Two buses will be provided for those with difficulty walking. Refreshments will be offered, but participants are encouraged to bring a lunch.
Man held captive
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 44-year-old Youngstown man told police he was held captive, threatened and beaten by another man Thursday afternoon, reports say. The man, according to reports, said he left a note at a West Ravenwood home concerning money he was owed for cutting grass. Reports say the resident of the house later saw the man and invited him back to the house, where he accused him of breaking into the house and pulled a handgun on the man, threatening to kill him. The man escaped after being hit in the head and neck with the gun, reports say.
South Side gunfire
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gunfire, five to six shots, woke a 43-year-old woman in the 50 block of East Auburndale Avenue around 3:45 a.m. today. When the woman checked for damage, she found five bullet holes in the glass and frame of her living-room window. She told police she has no idea who shot up the house.
Home is vandalized
BOARDMAN -- A 44-year-old Boardman man reported $1,750 worth of vandalism to his home early today. The damage to his front double-paned window and frame was a result of two bricks thrown at his house, located in the 4000 block of Windsor Road, police said.
Toolbox, tools are stolen
BOARDMAN -- Youngstown Fence Inc., 235 E. Indianola Ave., reported Thursday that tools worth $300 and a toolbox worth $350 were stolen. The white metal and plastic toolbox, as well as various clamps, wrenches, files and drill bits, had been in the back of the work truck at a site in the 5000 block of West Boulevard, police said.
