New principal
COLUMBIANA -- Rachel Scull, 29, of Austintown has been hired as the new principal of Joshua Dixon Elementary School. The board of education voted Thursday to give her a two-year contract starting Aug. 1 with a $58,600 annual salary. The Youngstown State University graduate has been a principal in the Pymatuning Valley School District. The board is continuing its search for a new high school principal. The district also approved one-year contracts with its workers that allow for layoffs. The cuts will allow the district to comply with a state fiscal watch mandate to operate in the black.
Levy proposed
SALEM -- The Salem Parks Commission will ask voters to approve a 1-mill levy for five years for operating expenses. Voters defeated the issue earlier this year. Parks and Recreation Director Steven Faber said the proposed levy would bring in about $155,000 a year. A 0.5-mill levy for the commission is expiring. It brings in only about $55,000 a year under 1980 property values, the first year it was approved. City council has also cut its funding to the commission in recent years. The proposed levy will go to council, which must place it on the ballot.
Sirens malfunction

Police said they received 45 to 50 calls from residents about the activation that may have been caused by a lightning strike or an electrical malfunction. The city electrician was notified to check the system, police said.
