LISBON -- Columbiana County commissioners have decided five projects will receive shares of this year's Community Development Block Grant program funds.
Two of the projects are county projects. The others are in East Palestine, Negley and Salineville.
The commissioners on Wednesday voted to divide $330,000 in federal funds for mostly water and sewer projects that they said will encourage development.
What they are
The county projects include:
U$100,000 toward the extension of about five miles of waterline with 45 fire hydrants along state Route 45 south of Lisbon and Buckeye Road near West Point.
The total project cost is $1.1 million. The rest of the project will be paid for with grants, Ohio Issue 2 funds and tap-in fees.
The line will serve about 100 homes, 14 businesses and the Columbiana County Career Center.
U$41,251 earmarked for the demolition of the county-owned Karl Building in Lisbon for the site of a new headquarters for the county's emergency management agency.
The other projects include:
U$67,000 for the first phase of improving water service to the Jimtown area of Unity Township. East Palestine will add $10,000 to the grant to first replace a booster pump. City Manager Gary Clark said the line to the Jimtown area would be replaced later.
U$71,994, which is the total cost of the first phase, for a storm water drainage program in the residential and commercial areas of Negley. The project will help remove standing water in streets and alleys that can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus.
U$50,155, which will go to Salineville as its share of a $132,000 project. The rest -- an additional $82,000 -- will come from other government sources. The money will be used to replace 2,000 feet of a main waterline, six fire hydrants and 11 catch basins on Jefferson Street.
