WARREN -- For the price of a welcome mat, Holly and Joe Taylor bought a house.
The brother and sister from Mount Dora, Fla., paid $10 for the three-bedroom ranch-style home at 339 North Road, according to the county treasurer's office.
"We bought it on eBay," said Joe Taylor, Tuesday afternoon as he worked on painting the interior of the home. "We are always buying homes that are under $5,000, fixing them up and reselling. But I have to say this is the first home we bought for $10."
Taylor, 34, says he does not know why the former owner sold the house so cheap.
"There was some mention of how the neighbors complained about the grass being high, but I don't know why he didn't pay for someone to cut it," Joe Taylor said. "I'm not sure what his reasoning was for selling, but I'm glad we found it."
The home was sold by George C. Roscoe of Turnberry Court, Howland. Roscoe has an unpublished number and could not be reached to comment.
Amazed by condition
"We just purchased another home down south, and it was in horrible condition," Joe Taylor said. "We figured that this house, for $10, would be even worse. We were shocked. We pulled in the driveway the other night around 10 p.m. and couldn't believe it. We thought we had the wrong house."
The home needs a few thousand dollars' worth of work before the Taylors sell it.
"We are painting it right now, but look at these windows: They have beautiful wood trim," Joe Taylor said. "It's amazing."
The house has a two-car unattached garage, Florida room and plenty of storage space, Joe Taylor noted.
Nestled between East Market Street and U.S. Route 422, the home is within walking distance of North Road Elementary School.
"We talked to a Realtor, and I think we can get about $75,000 for it when we are done," Joe Taylor said. "The house is in great shape. I still can't believe it."
