NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers lose third straight, begin series at Lowell tonight
Mahoning Valley had five hits while being routed by Auburn, 11-0.
AUBURN, N.Y. -- Auburn sent the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to New England on a sour note.
The Doubledays scored six runs in the first inning on the way to an 11-0 victory in a New York-Penn League Pinckney Division game Tuesday at Falcon Park.
It was the third straight win for Auburn (3-2), a Toronto Blue Jays affiliate, which had lost the first two games of the season to Mahoning Valley (2-3).
The Scrappers, who begin a three-game series tonight at Lowell, will play the Doubledays nine times out of their first 15 games.
Mike MacDonald (1-0), the first of four pitchers for the Doubledays, worked five innings and didn't give up a hit. He struck out three and walked one in winning his first game of the season.
The Scrappers managed just five hits off Auburn pitching, including a double by Brett Parker.
Auburn tagged Mahoning Valley pitching for 13 hits, including a home run by Chip Cannon. Erik Kratz added three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs, while Vincent Esposito, Brian Hall and Eric Nielsen added two hits apiece.
Kyle Collins, a rookie right-hander from the University of San Diego, suffered the loss for Mahoning Valley after allowing six runs (one earned) in two innings. He was hurt by poor defense as the Scrappers committed three errors.
Collins got relief help from Charles Knippschild and Parker.
After playing three games at Lowell, the Scrappers' road trip takes them to Brooklyn, N.Y. They won't return home until June 29 to begin a four-game series against the Doubledays.
The Batavia Muckdogs, leaders of the Pinckney Division, continued with their strong start, defeating Jamestown 10-8 for their fourth win in five games. Jamestown fell to 1-4.
