EDUCATION Dean hired for college high school



The new dean began his education career teaching in Youngstown.
YOUNGSTOWN -- As Youngstown State University and Youngstown city schools officials signed an agreement to officially kick off the Early College High School on the YSU campus Tuesday, officials announced the hiring of the school's dean.
Larry C. Johnson, principal of McKinley Elementary School in Warren, will head the new high school.
The Early College High School, set to open Aug. 18 in YSU's Fedor Hall, will start with an initial class of 75 to 100 ninth-graders and will increase by one class each year to a maximum of 400 students. It will be one of six such schools in Ohio and 60 in the United States.
Students will graduate high school with up to 60 college credits, equal to an associate's degree or two year's toward a bachelor's degree. A goal is to target at-risk students who are unlikely to attend college.
Qualifications
Johnson, a Youngstown resident, has been a principal in Warren since 1996 and taught in Youngstown from 1993 to 1996. Before that, he worked for AT & amp;T.
"I think Larry possesses all of the qualities we were looking for ... leadership, a true desire to move students forward, believing in the program, having knowledge about the program," said John Tullio, the Early College High school project manager for the school district."
Johnson earned holds bachelor's and master's degrees in education and is currently pursuing a doctorate at YSU. He also holds certification as a principal and superintendent.
Johnson has served on the superintendent's strategic planning team for the Youngstown City School District, as well as on the district's levy committee and facilities utilization task force.
He also has been a member of the dean's advisory committee on education at YSU, is a member of the board of deacons at Third Baptist Church and is a young-adult Sunday school teacher.
