PIANIST Warren native to perform in D.C.



Morgan is pursuing a master's degree in music at Howard University.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dana Kristina-Joi Morgan, a Warren native and concert pianist, will perform July 17 at the 20th anniversary of "Celebration of the D.C. United Way Minority Table" featuring Dr. Johnetta Cole, past president of Spelman College, and activist Dick Gregory.
Morgan, a daughter of David Sr. and Gwen Morgan of Warren, is a 2003 graduate of Capital University Conservatory of Music. She is pursuing a master's degree in music at Howard University, where she serves as musician and director of the Howard Chapel Gospel Choir with founder and adviser Richard Smallwood. Morgan will receive the fall 2004 Graduate Student Assistance Scholarship and will teach undergraduate students at Howard.
Activities and achievements
Morgan, who has studied piano for 20 years, won first place in the Sidney De-Knight Piano Scholarship Competition May 22 in Philadelphia. She received a perfect score from the judges, who represented major conservatories.
She also participated in the Delta Sigma Theta sorority's "Emerging Artists" program sponsored by the Federal City Alumnae Chapter Arts and Letters Committee.
Morgan performed a piano tribute in honor of Quincy Jones, the 2004 Uncommon Height Award recipient, during a program March 18 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
Jones, who was recognized for his more than 50 years in the music business, is a composer, record producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, TV producer, record company executive, magazine founder and multi-media entrepreneur.
The program also included Dr. Maya Angelou, author, actress and poet; Debbie Allen, choreographer; Joe Coleman, lead singer for The Platters; Patti Austin, vocalist; and Cheryl Cooper, executive director of the National Council of Negro Women Inc.
